After a busy day walking all around the beautiful city of Bratislava, Slovakia, we were dropped back off at our hotel and had a bit of a rest before we headed back out to the Old part of the City for our evening meal.
We had decided that we were going to try and get a table at the World famous Figlmüller restaurant so we could have some proper Viennese Fare. For over 100 years the restaurant has been serving up its Schnitzel to great acclaim. I so needed to try it!
Now, Boo can be a little fussy when it comes to some foods so eating some traditional foods can be a little problematic. However we had checked the menu out before deciding and as they had Fried Cheese, it seemed like a good option – Fried Cheese is ALWAYS a good option where we are both concerned!
So, we hopped on the trams and tubes and made our way to the restaurant in Wollzeile. It was PACKED.
The lovely lady on the door told us to wait and she would see what she could do. Several other customers turned up and she turned them away. It was looking a bit optimistic for us.
Sadly, she was unable to accommodate us but said they had a larger restaurant in the next street. Figlmüller Bäckerstrasse
We wandered down there, only to find all the people who had been turned away were now in front of us in the queue! Arrgh.
Not deterred, we stood and waited, and to be fair they were brilliant at getting people in, seated and served. We stood around for maybe 20 minutes and then we were given a great table and menus to peruse over, even though I already knew what I wanted.
On arrival in the Country we were told by our driver that the wine was very good, so I though I would give it a go. Oh and a beer too.
I then opted for the Schnitzel, made from Pork Tenderloin. I went for the butter rice to go with it and Boo had the fried Emmental Cheese.
There were three potato options on the menu, Browned potatoes, Fried potatoes and Parsley potatoes. Now, having been caught out before Boo asked the waiter what the fried potatoes were.
He replied that they were potatoes that had been fried. ‘Like chips then’ was her response.
‘Yes, Yes like that’
So of course she ordered them.
Within around 15 minutes our meals were served up.
I had been given the biggest portion of fried meat I have ever had in my life! The Schnitzel was massive and looked so so good.
Boo’s cheese had arrived and was also a massive portion. Along with her fried potatoes.
Yeah, clearly NOT chips. However, they were fabulous looking and tasting.
We later ascertained that the Browned potatoes were in fact Jacket spuds!
We started tucking in and it was a mammoth task. I literally have never had such a huge portion on my plate before, but ever single mouthful was divine. I was determined to finish it all.
Around 30 minutes later and I had managed to consume the whole plateful. Boo had long since given up on her mammoth cheese feast.
We had hoped to give one of the desserts a go, but both of us were struggling. It was decided to get a dessert to share, and even if we didn’t eat it all we could happily say that we did our best.
There was only one dessert that we could choose; Kaiserschmarrn. Fluffy torn pancakes served with stewed plums.
I was so glad that we decided to order it as it was out of this World. The pancakes were fluffy, light and had a little caramelised sugar on them. The stewed plums were both sweet and tart at the same time and it was literally the best end to a meal ever.
All told my meal with 3 alcoholic drinks came to around €30 which to be honest was pretty good value, based on previous meals in Vienna.
And to be honest, it was probably the best meal I had all holiday so I genuinely didn’t mind!
Figlmüller was a wonderful experience and I was so glad that we got to try it. I highly recommend a visit if you happen to be in the area and If I ever find myself in Vienna again, I know exactly where I will be going…
Till next time,
Txx
