So if you are a regular reader of my blog you will know about a recent visit I went on to The Bra Spa in Uppermill, to try out a new kind of bra, The Optifit.

Well, after the lovely Sue fitted me with a plain (and in her own words) quite an ugly bra, She left me to wear it for a week and was happy with the results so set about making a much prettier version.

Now, lets be frank her ladies. When you are trying to hold in N cup breasts, there is only so much ‘pretty’ you can manage.

I mean, my bras are never going to look like something on the Victorias Secret catwalk!

And you know what? That is absolutely fine! I don’t care about fancy and delicate, I just want a bra that fits, doesn’t hurt and holds them where they need to be held, and I don’t mean around my knees!

So, how is the Optifit doing for me?

The black version that Sue sent is much prettier than the prototype. I got to choose the lace I preferred and I really love the whole effect.

However, it is still really high cut and this poses problems for when I am wearing some of my vintage dresses. But for every day, work, shopping, and even lounging in the house of an evening, it is perfect.

If you are anything like me and thousands of others, the first thing you do on entering the house after a hard day is pull the bra off and thank the heavens that the ‘girls’ are free.

With the Optifit I don’t need to do that. At all.

It is so comfortable that I can wear it the whole evening, only taking it off before I get into bed.

So, what is the benefit of that then?

Well, when I get in from work and I am wearing a normal bra, It comes off immediately. If I then try even the simplest of things, for example sweeping the floor, within 5 minutes my lower back is in agony.

Standing at a cooker leaves me in pain. Bending to load a washing machine feels like the weight of my breasts (somewhere in the region of 18lbs when they were weighed at Stoke Mandeville about 10 years ago) are ripping away from my ribcage, pulling the muscles into spasm.

My lower back gives out all the time, meaning I have repeat visits to the Chiropractor.

Yet wearing the Optifit the weight and placement of my breasts means NONE of this happens. And I am NOT exaggerating.

I literally have never been as comfortable as what I have been in the last three weeks wearing this bra.

Yes, the placement of where it should sit takes some perseverance, and you do have some initial discomfort whilst your body gets used to standing in a different way and your posture, which for many has been horrendously poor for many years, readjusts itself.

If nothing else, the lack of wires means I don’t have the welts and digging in that I do with every other bra I have ever worn.

But one of the biggest improvement for me is actually under the breast itself.

For those of you who have ever suffered from Intertrigo you will know JUST how bad this can get. No matter what the weather, how much you wash, how you keep yourself dry, one of the biggest problems with large breasts is the skin to skin contact. The air is trapped, becomes hot, sweaty and moist and before you know it, you have an infection that can be excruciatingly painful.

I can only describe a flare up of Intertrigo as if you have suffered a scald or burn underneath your breast (this can also affect areas such as a  tummy flap or armpit) It stings, burns, is itchy and generally absolutely kills.

The severity of it varies from person to person, but I generally suffer a break out at least once a week. Boots the Chemist looks at me very disapprovingly when I turn up at the counter to buy yet more Hydrocortisone, which seems to be the only thing to relieve the infection.

Of course, sticking a steroid cream on delicate areas every week really isn’t something I like to do. It’s not a healthy way to live.

However it is the only thing I know that clears it up in around 24 hours. And believe me, I have tried EVERYTHING.

But since I have been wearing this bra (over 3 weeks now) I have not had a single flare up. NOT ONE!

And that for me makes this a winner in my eyes.

Yes, it isn’t conventional. It may not win the sexiest bra award.

But you know what?

How the Optifit works

For once in my life (well at least the last 25 years) I am comfortable. Pain free. Infection free. Supported and my posture is improving.

I can’t thank Sue enough for working with me on this project. It literally has been totally life changing for me.
