For several months now I have been a member of a couple of pages on Facebook that are based in America. Run by a mother and daughter Tammy and Bonita, they attend auctions and estate sales, and have to offer some of the most beautiful vintage items for amazing prices.
Hats, Gloves, Bags, Jewellery and Clothing, you name it, they manage to find the most wonderful pieces which they then auction with low minimum prices.
So far I have been lucky enough to win several hats, some glasses and brooches.
Of course, the downside is the postage to the UK however I a lucky to have a very good friend in Chicago that I can ship to.
Recently I bought a stunning red percher hat from Tammy and I am so looking forward to its arrival. The fact that I have nothing to wear with it never stops me. It just means I need to find an outfit that will work!
In the next week or two I am expecting a box of goodies from my friend, hopefully before Twinwood as I have plans to wear a couple of the pieces.
All in all, I don’t think I have ever spent more than $40 for a piece and some have been even much cheaper than that.
This straw platter was literally the hat of my dreams. When I won it back in March I was ecstatic! After several weeks of my friend keeping an eye out it literally never turned up. I contacted Tammy who was a devastated as I was. She offered replacements and refunds but I told her to keep the money as I was sure I would end up buying more from her anyway.
A few weeks passed and I fell in love with the red percher shown further up. I stayed up all night and when I won it was so happy. I used the money that Tammy was holding for me (with a little bit more added) and she duly posted it off to my mate, Jules.
Fast Forward to the beginning of August and I got a surprise photo from Jules. Wearing my straw platter hat no less! It had been missing for nearly 5 months and had turned up at the final hour. He managed to squeeze it in with the other six hats I had purchased, a couple of brooches and a pair of vintage spectacles, all in time for Twinwood.
It has almost become a bit of an addiction; the ladies post their wares 2 or 3 times a week at least and you can always guarantee I see something that I like.
My only big problem is the time difference; their auctions end around 2am in the morning and I struggle to stay up till then. Although, I have been known to sent my alarm for 0150 so I wake up in time to make sure I don’t get outbid!
So if you want to have a look at some amazing Vintage bargains, pop a nice friend request to Tammy and Bonita Markwick; tell them I sent ya! You won’t regret it, but your bank balance might!
Of course, like a lot of women, when I get asked if it is a new purchase, I have to respond with ‘This old thing? I have had it ages!’
Don’t forget though, Mum’s the word!
Till next time,
