Recently I was on my lunch break and I happened to pop into a large UK Supermarket. You know the one, Every Little helps and all that!
As I wandered along the ladies section I saw this outfit and immediately wanted it.
A Beige, Mustard and Black check print set of dungarees. I literally was salivating over it.
Then I found out that they only go up to a size 22. Shame on you!
I put my disappointment out there on social media and had an influx of other lovely plus size ladies send me pictures and links of similar items, including the lovely Athena Blank and Phillippa Glanville who sent me links to these two beauties from Yours Clothing.
Well, I was torn. I loved the pattern on the second one, yet really liked the idea of a pair of dungarees, even though I would probably look like a cross between an oompa loompa and a minion!
I was very undecided to be honest. At 5ft2 I doubted I would be able to pull off the dungarees without looking absolutely ridiculous.
However, the dress was a real possibility. I have some black knee high boots that could work with it, and although it is a departure from my normal style, it does have a 60’s feel to it.
Of course, I had to go onto the Yours Clothing website JUST to have a look. Encouraged by Phillippa she told me that she had half a dozen that were really comfy and easy to dress up or down.
I started looking and found 8 that I liked. Yeah, I can’t make things simple at all.
I started off looking at the different patterns and then went on to see if they had any tops to match. The one I first saw was unavailable in my size, so that put an end to that.
I moved onto the one that had caught my eye second. The Black and Pink Check Pinafore Dress just looked perfect. And they had it in my size. As they did, it went straight into the basket.
Now, I wasn’t keen on the fact they had paired it with a red top and so set off to find a better match.
Spotting this seamed scoop neck top, I thought it was perfect and popped that into the basket too.
So I was all done. Or was I?
Popping into the sale section I saw this lovely bag which wasn’t quite as bright as the top, but looked like it would match the pink in the dress. However as a reversible bag with a black option, either way it would work AND it was only £7.50 in the sale. Bargain.
That was the last thing to pop into my basket and I went to checkout. A whole outfit with a bag for £50. A pretty good price if you ask me.
I waited a couple of days for the parcel to arrive.
So, the verdict?
For once I was at a loss. I put the outfit on and stepped back to look at my reflection.
The dress was a lovely pattern, the quality was good and the top felt lovely next to the skin. The bag was super cute and I loved the fact it could be used in two ways.
Now for the whole look….
Well, all I can say is that I hated everything about it!
Each component was fabulous, but when I put them all on, I just wanted to cry. Not through any fault of Yours Clothing. I just didn’t like what I saw in the mirror.
As you know, my style is quite defined. Vintage/Glamour would be the best way of putting it. I am used to my big skirts, hair flowers, petticoats and turbans.
I just didn’t feel like ‘me’ in the outfit.
Don’t get me wrong; I wanted to try out a different look. Something more fast fashion than a 40’s inspired dress. I had to try it.
But I think it was just a step too far for me. I felt old and frumpy. I didn’t feel I had any personality in the outfit and an awful lot of people on social media agreed with me. The pinafore just didn’t sit right on my body and I looked shapeless.
It seems stupid that an outfit can affect you that badly. But this one did me. I just didn’t feel right at all.
Sadly, this outfit will be going back.
Does this mean my dreams of a pinafore dress have been burnt?
Hell no!
There are others on the Yours Clothing site that are a lot more fitted, and as they say ‘If at first you don’t succeed’
Bloody have another crack at it!
Till next time,
