So, there are a few of you out there that know my husband has been diagnosed with quite a serious eye condition. One that requires an operation at the world famous Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.
Now, the operation he was due to have was booked in for early on a Thursday morning. He needed to be there for 0700 and as the hospital was around 75 minutes away, I had a look for a hotel close by that we could stay at.
Going to www.booking.com I found a BEAUTIFUL hotel, well I say hotel. It was a stately home only 2 miles from the hospital, so perfectly placed.
Anstey Hall looked stunning. A proper mansion with numerous rooms and also barns that you could stay in.
I booked 2 nights there from Sunday 13th January and settled down to get ready for the operation.
Three days before the operation we had a phone call cancelling the date. Several emergency detached retinas got pushed ahead of the operation and we were put back until the 16th January.
I called Anstey Hall and they were amazing. They altered the dates for us without any financial penalty and we got ready to arrive on Wednesday 15th January.
Prior to arriving, I rang the hotel to find out about the facilities and the location of the room we had booked. It turned out that we had been assigned a room on the 3rd floor, and there were no lifts.
Now, that would have been fine on the first day, however once the operation had been done, a pretty much blind man and 3 floors of a winding staircase really didn’t bode well.
Thankfully they were able to put us into the only room on the ground floor, which I was told was pretty quiet, but not often occupied. To be fair, this didn’t matter to us, it was more for ease and convenience.
We arrived around 3pm on Wednesday 16th January and were blown away by the opulence of the building. from outside it was simply stunning. Three stories of stunning architecture greeted us.
We walked into the foyer to be greeted by a huge fireplace with sofas surrounding it. Wonderful carved accents went around the walls and it felt like we had walked back in time.
The staff couldn’t be any more helpful. They showed us around the house before taking us to our room on the ground floor.
And what a room it was!
Antique furniture, bookcases and a bathroom to die for; I was in my element.
The room came with a jacuzzi bath which was massive. I knew that I had to try it out before we left.
Anstey Hall was a bit unusual compared to a lot of hotels I have stayed at. One of the major things was that they had a ‘honesty bar’ where you poured your own drink and wrote down exactly what you had.
Well, there may be some out there that could totally take advantage of that, however we were not one of them.
Having a Cambridge Gin and dry ginger and a glass of red wine, we took the beverages to our room and started to chill out.
When I say chill out, we both fell asleep on the huge bed, for around 2 hours, before waking up in time for Bradley Walsh and The Chase. And they say romance is dead!
For dinner, we decided to go to a local pub/restaurant that the reception had recommended.
The Green Man was a 2 minute walk from Anstey Hall and was AMAZING.
I plan on writing a full blog on The Green Man as it was THAT fantastic, however let me just say the meal was divine and we went back to Anstey both full and very happy.
Watch this space for the next installment of the hotel AND The Green Man.
Till next time,
