When I last left you it was in a Lithuanian Hotel room hoping to get some sleep from the constant bell ringing of the Cathedral opposite our bedroom.
I am of course talking about a recent holiday with my Blog Wifey Boo to Vilnius for 6 days.
Today was going to be a rainy day for most parts so we decided to hop on a City tour bus and see the sights. The bus had two separate routes, the red and blue line was the larger line and bus, and then the green and orange line which was a smaller minibus and took on the outskirts of the area too.
We hopped on the red/blue bus and settled in with our headphones to hear all about the history of the City and Country. The bus ticket for two days cost €25 which is pretty good value as you can use it as much as you want; hopping off and on at your leisure.
The bus has a pick up right outside of our hotel so it was pretty handy, especially with the rubbish weather. We got on the red/blue line and settled in to listen to the English audio commentary which was really clear, informative and interesting.
On this bus we saw all the important sights; The Town Hall, Churches and Cathedrals, Uzupis, the River Neris, Pilies Street and more. Although it was raining we had a very good view from the bus and it was much better sitting and seeing it all, rather than getting soaked.
It was so interesting to see the difference between the very modern business buildings and the older pre-war residences. Churches that were derelict during the Soviet regime that are now slowly being renovated and brought back to the community and reopening as houses of worship.
We worked out a few places that we would like to spend more in-depth time and worked our way around three of the lines. After popping on and off and getting a little wet, we had seen a handful of churches, we had decided to stop off at Uzupis again and try some of the local delicacy, fried rye bread with a cheese dip.
Popping into the main bar on the River, we ordered a drink and a portion of the bread that also came with onion rings, local salami style sausage and two or three regional cheeses.
I have to say it was absolutely delicious and we could have eaten another couple of plates of it!
We visited a few more churches before popping back onto the bus for a few more sights, taking in the green line. Passing the KGB museum we decided that it was somewhere we wanted to go and see on one of our other days. We knew it would be hard going, but important to see how things were in the past.
Eventually we headed back to the hotel to get ready for the evening. There was an Indian restaurant on the square next to the hotel and we had decided to give it a go, mainly as we knew there should be a good variety of vegetarian food for Boo and I would pretty much eat anything.
Arriving at Sue’s Indian Raja restaurant we were welcomed in and shown to a beautiful table. The whole place was beautiful; from the animal wallpaper to the flowers floating in a huge bowl of water.
Ordering my favourite, Butter Chicken, Rice and a cheese naan bread.
I have to say it was absolutely gorgeous. The naan bread was possibly the very best one I have ever had. Finishing off the lot, we decided to have a dessert and I went for gulab jamun as it is also another of my favourites.
The meal was outstanding and we left full and pretty happy!
Heading to the room we had a real ‘rock n roll’ night planned; Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone!
Lying in our beds, the laptop on a chair between them, we had an amazing night watching one of our favourite movies before it was time to sleep…
Another busy day planned!
Till next time,
