It was our final day in Vilnius and we had chosen to spend it on a day trip.
But this was not just any day trip, this was to a medieval castle on a lake. How cool is that?
Situated about 40 minutes from the Capital, Trakai is a picture perfect location especially on a sunny day, which we were lucky to have!
The bus picked us up from just outside our hotel (which had allowed us to check out and leave our cases there) and this meant I didn’t have to struggle too much with my leg.
Sitting on the back we had our own tour guide to tell us all about the area, the journey and of course the Castle. When we got on to the bus we had a conversation with her to see if the tour would be suitable for my walking issues. She advised that it would be fine, however I may struggle with the stairs in the castle as they were very steep and tiny.
I was happy with this and had already decided that I would give the upper floors of the building a miss. I had a book on the go on my Kindle so was happy to sit and relax with it.
The journey went really quickly and we pulled up beside tiny wooden houses that were the style of the community and that governmental rules state has to stay that way; almost like listed buildings in the UK.
We took a 10 minute walk along the side of the lake, which we found out was in two sections. Eventually we came to the part that had Trakai Castle.
It was a wonderful sight.
Terracotta walls, tiled roofs all at the end of a wooden planked path. The sun was high in the sky and there was not a cloud in sight. It was the perfect day for the tour.
We followed our guide into the Castle. It was a high, imposing place with staircases like ladders. I certainly wasn’t going to give them a go!
I happily sat on a marble base and read my book for about 3o minutes. I also took a load of photographs to remember the trip. It really was a rather special place.
Boo came back down from the higher levels and it was then that we had some free time for ourselves. Splitting the group up, we decided to try and see if we could get one of the 3o minute boat tours so we could get some better pictures.
Sadly, the boat we wanted was missing its Captain so we headed to the souvenir stalls to get some magnets and other bits for friends back home. Time was passing fast and so we decided to have an impromptu photoshoot on the decking before hitting the closest restaurant.
Our guide had recommended trying a local delicacy; Kibinai.
This was described as a local pastry filled with meat or vegetable or curd cheese; almost like a cheap street food that was very tasty and filling.
We chose to eat at Apvalaus Stalo Klubas which was situated on the Lake with views of the Castle. I ordered the Kibinai with Lamb. It came hot and fresh.
And looked a lot like a Cornish Pasty.
I have to say it was absolutely delicious. And tasted like a Cornish Pasty.
It was however a lot smaller than a Pasty so I ordered a second one!
Time was against us so I decided to take it with me on the walk back to the bus. Nibbling away, I could see that it was the perfect street food; easily portable, eatable and with no mess.
I thoroughly enjoyed the two Kibinai and wish I had discovered them earlier in the holiday.
We got back on the bus and started the journey back to Vilnius. Our trip was simply amazing and I had come to love the beautiful, clean, welcoming City and would be sad to leave it.
Getting our cases we got an Uber to the airport and waited there for our flight home.
Joining the queue at Ryanair to check in, we were about fifth in the queue. When it was our turn we asked for assistance to the plane, again due to the stairs.
I was whipped into a wheelchair, taken to the gate and left there until it was time to get onto the Thunderlift. Eventually it was time to get inside it and get lifted to the back of the plane.
All too soon the plane took off and flew us back to the UK.
A wonderful trip away with the best of friends.
Till next time,
