As many of you know my twins share the same birthday as Grandma so we try and do something together on their special day. This year we decided to go to lunch at Turtle Bay. Some nice spicy food and cocktails on a dreary day seemed just the way to go!
Getting there for around 1pm we were seated quickly and given drink and food menus.
I knew what I wanted to eat however as I usually like the same meal but was unsure what I wanted to drink. As you know I do love a good cocktail and they certainly have a fair old few on the list!
The waitress was over shortly and we placed drinks orders; cocktails, beer, elderflower cooler and a watermelon slush were put into the tablet.
Then it was down to food.
I went for the Goat Curry and Rice n peas. Mum had the Jerk Salmon, Little Chick the Sticky Ribs and Baby Bear went for the Roti Rolls with Sweetcorn Fritters.
There was a special going on with the sides where you got several at a reduced price. We went for the five sides and ordered cheesy jerk fries, cheesy jerk sweet potatoes, curried chickpeas, spicy mac n cheese and another portion of rice n peas.
We had to wait for around 20 minutes for our food and it came out hot and fresh which was a bonus as the service was pretty shocking!
I had asked them for water for the table and after two attempts we were still waiting. Eventually we got the wait staffs attention and asked for the water and also ordered some more drinks for the table.
Going with a rum punch (made from Wray & Nephew rum), Mum and Baby Bear had mint tea and Little Chick went with a UB40 cocktail.
The food really was pretty good and we cleared pretty much the whole lot.
There was a final straw in the waitresses coffin though. We hadn’t even had the table cleared or desserts offered when the waitress turned up with our bill!!!
We hadn’t actually asked for it, so was a bit surprised. Sadly when we opened it, it wasn’t ours as it was only around £20.
It took a while to get the ladies attention to tell her the bill wasn’t ours. It took so long to get their attention due to the fact that they were stood at the bar gossiping. Laughing and talking, they weren’t paying any mind to the people sitting in the pretty much empty restaurant. It did make us wonder…
Anyway after she took the bill away, she immediately returned with our bill (unasked for) which was closer to £200.
One of the things I am a real stickler for is leaving a tip in restaurants. A minimum 15% is my standard and if really good even more.
In this case we were all pretty adamant that we would not be leaving a tip!
We left the restaurant very full but not having much of a good impression of the restaurant at all which was pretty much a shame. It did make me think about whether I would go back again.
Thankfully everyone had a good rest of the day and some lovely presents, which made up for it.
Oh and a scrummy Birthday Cake which looked like this (but I forgot to take a picture!)
Till next time,
