So it is pretty obvious to most people that I love me some vintage!
When I first got interested it was pretty much the 50’s style as this was all that I could really get in my size. So I invested in a lot of swing dresses and skirts, some good and some not so good. After all it was a total leap into another world and I didn’t have anyone to guide me along the way.
I will admit I made mistakes. I paired the wrong shoes with the outfit or the wrong era accessories with a dress, however I loved what I wore and what I looked like.
I then started to visit more vintage events and with that a love for a slightly earlier era and my style and knowledge evolved as did my wardrobe.
Out went a lot of swing skirts and in came hats and handbags and gloves. Again as I have written before, it is nigh on impossible to get original vintage in size 26. Usually what happened when someone didn’t want a dress that size anymore it was a case of ‘Make do and Mend’. The outfits would be repurposed for a smaller person or children and this led to a serious lack of big girls clothing from the era.
Nevertheless I used repro clothing or had dresses made for me which I then paired with original accessories such as the aforementioned hats, gloves and bags.
Oh and Jewellery!
Now I love me a brooch. In my opinion you can transform a whole outfit with a good brooch and I have managed to build up quite a collection.
Of course, I am not going to sit here and say all of these pretties are 1930’s or 40’s. Sometimes it is pretty hard to date a piece as a lot of designs are reused over and over and also tastes change and things become popular again.
A lot of my collection could be 60’s and 70’s but you know what?
I really don’t care. I love the colours, styles and sparkles.
I also love the fact that they are very often a talking point. People will actually comment on something I am wearing and I usually have a bit of a tale about it. The things have a history, a previous life, one I can imagine and almost see.
So, as strange as this post may seem I am going to share a few of my favourite pieces and yes, there may be a few modern pieces in there but who cares!
Some of my favourite brooches have Aurora Borealis stones in them that shine and sparkle in many colours. I have one specific one that I wear on my winter coat that I absolutely adore and was gutted recently when in Lisbon to lose a stone. I hopefully can get this replaced and put back onto my coat.
However this means I need another one for the interim and I do have a selection to choose from.
Top contender is this little stunner
The next set has yet another favourite of mine, the Mother Brooch. This one was given to me by a wonderful friend whose Grandmother it originally belonged to and I treasure it so much.
So where have all these beauties come from?
As I have said, some have been found at Vintage days out, others gifted to me and then yet others bought as presents especially since people realised the kind of things I like.
The final brooch I am going to share is so fabulously flamboyant and I even have the perfect outfit for it. I give you the Passionate purple wonder….
So there you have it…. A Veritable Treasure Trove of Bling!
Till Next time,
