A couple of weeks ago I received a lovely email from a lady called Lena over in Copenhagen, Denmark. She had seen my blog and thought I could be a great fit to collaborate with ‘Messy’MessyWeekend’Weekend‘ a company that sells sunglasses and ski goggles.
Now most of you regular readers know I have had a long standing relationship with Retropeepers as they have an amazing range of vintage style spectacles that I genuinely love and wear regularly (when I am not wearing my contact lenses).
I also have a smashing pair of sunglasses from them based on an original pair of Frida Kahlo sunglasses and these have travelled around Europe with me.
So initially when I got the email from Lena, I was planning on saying thank you, but no!
However, I started looking at the website a bit closer and saw something that made me rethink my decision and I really thought was worth writing about.
MessyWeekend partnered with 4theplanet to create a project called ‘Origines’ which funds and organises volunteer lead clean ups of the Pacific Ocean.
In fact, for every pair of sunglasses or goggles they sell, they remove 2kgs/4.4lbs of plastic from the Ocean and recycle and reuse it responsibly.
Currently the project is working in Colombia however there are 26 other locations that they have targeted and are in the process of setting up further projects.
Lets think about it; plastic is a pretty lightweight product as a rule. I can’t even begin to visualise what 2kg of plastic would look like, but it is definitely more than a couple of empty coke bottles!
In fact Google tells me that a 1.5ltr bottle of water weighs approximately 13.7 grams. That means you need to collect 148 x 1.5ltr bottles in order to make up 2 kilos.
148 bottles!
That is a whole lot of plastic that is removed by the simple purchase of a pair of sunglasses or snow goggles.
Pretty fantastic if you ask me.
So, I had a look at the range and was quite surprised. Most of the sunglasses have a vintage feel to them, however I am very fussy about what glasses I wear and also a little bit worried about going outside of my comfort zone. Whilst I really loved the look of the Shackleton and also the Grace in transparent green, I genuinely didn’t think I could pull them off.
Instead I went for a beautiful oversize round cat eye shape with the stunning Thelma in Black. The glasses come in four different colours, Black, Transparent Grey, Blue/Tortoise or Pink.
Now as much as I loved the different colours, Black goes with everything!
I emailed Lena and asked if it was possible to have the Thelma in black and mentioned that I was due to go on holiday to Athens in a couple of weeks and they would be perfect to review whilst there.
Lena emailed me back to say that she had ordered them for me and they were on their way.
I have to say that I was absolutely gobsmacked when they arrived less that 24 hours later!
Perfectly packaged, the glasses came in a pretty cool slide open box with the company logo and a bright green leaf pattern.
Sliding out the drawer the glasses went kept inside a black drawstring bag with the brand name on.
Opening the bag I was suprised to feel the weight and solidity to them. The arms were robust but not thick, the frame oversized and the lenses had a golden nuance to them, making them look fantastic. They also provide UV400 protection which covers both UVA and UVB rays.
Pretty good I think.
So anyway, I took them in my rucksack off to Athens with the marvellous blog wifey Boo. Here are some shots from beautiful Greece.
Quite apt that I am near the beautiful Greek Oceanside whilst the volunteers are cleaning 2 kilos of plastic from a country the other side of the World.
I have to say, I think that is the coolest part to it all.
Until next time,
