These are difficult times. The COVID crisis is still upon us and the statistics don’t seem to be slowing down very much.
I must admit I was very dismissive in the very beginning as it seemed the Government were taking seriously extreme measures when our statistics were not even in the hundreds!
Then they rose to several hundred a day and I started to change my mind and opinion.
Don’t get me wrong, even though I couldn’t understand the measures, I still complied with them and did as I was told.
Then people I knew started suffering with it.
Parents of friends and colleagues sadly passed away and the statistics rose into the thousands and confirmed cases into the hundreds of thousands.
You could tell that people were listening as the roads were empty on the way to my job as a key worker. The customers declined to virtually zero (as it should be) and supermarkets changed the way we entered, walked up the aisles and paid for our goods, IF you could get them.
Even now after five weeks in, I can’t get a packet of plain flour for love nor money! As one of the Gogglebox cast said, it would be easier to find crack cocaine than flour and pasta!
Anyway, where exactly am I going with this?
One of the biggest things as a key worker is that we are told that dealing with the public is a huge risk and we must take preventative measures; masks, gloves, disinfecting wipes, 2 metre distancing and more.
All COVID Protected (Hopefully)
The only downside was that the thin elastic straps of the blue masks were making the backs of my ears quite sore with repeated wear.
So I was really thrilled when I saw a friend on Facebook, the lovely Sandra McEvoy was making some material masks I sent her a message asking if it was possible to purchase some from her.
She had a varied choice of material and I mentioned a couple that I thought would be perfect. In this case sugar skulls and unicorns.
Sugar Skulls
Sandra sent me a lovely message saying she had actually found some vintage patterned material and would I like that. Well, of course I would!
I asked Sandra how much she wanted for them and she said she wasn’t asking for payment but if I would be willing to make a donation to a local hospice, Weston Hospicecare, then that would be perfect.
Unicorns
Well, what a lovely gesture and I absolutely was happy to make the donation.
I was pretty gobsmacked when only 2 days later a lovely parcel arrived in the post containing FOUR masks and a little surprise bonus, a handmade keyring.
Within 2 Days!
What an absolutely wonderful thing to do!
Since my parcel has arrived, Sandra has managed to knock up another 55 which means she has made around 120 masks AND 100 keyrings.
Four choices
And she is doing this totally voluntarily and without reward.
Pretty bloody amazing, if you ask me!
Perfect Material
She even told me her sewing machine had broken last week, but thankfully the repair man managed to get the overlocker (not sure what that is – sewing machine clueless) fixed in less than 24 hours. Clearly he is a little gem too.
