Friday 8th May saw a very special Anniversary.
On that day in 1945, the German Army offered a complete and unconditional surrender to the Allied Forces. Europe celebrated the end of World War II and peace started to reign.
Now it is 75 years later and Europe are currently fighting a different kind of battle.
This time with the killer virus COVID-19.
Last year the Government took the decision to change the early May Bank Holiday which is always on a Monday from the 4th May to Friday the 8th. This has only ever happened once in my lifetime, in 1995 on the 50th Anniversary.
Plans to have street parties and shindigs were all in place and then the virus hit.
Social distancing means that even though the parties have all been cancelled, I didn’t see any reason that my family and I couldn’t have a party at home.
So I spent a little time planning a menu, asked the family if they fancied it and set up a 1940’s playlist.
Afternoon tea for 4 people, with sandwiches, trifle, cake and different varieties of tea. I was hopeful that the day would stay dry and we could get out into the garden for it.
I had a lovely cornflower blue dress with a vintage flair and I thought it would be a perfect match with my VE Celebration flower accessories that had arrived from Ruby Boo Makes.
Pairing that up with a crocheted hair snood, vintage clip on earrings and Lindybop shoes, I was ready to enjoy the afternoon festivities.
I had laid on a full spread and we sat enjoying the sounds of Vera Lynn, Glen Miller and more. Whilst it couldn’t be a street party for all the neighbours, we made the best of the situation and had a jolly lovely time!
Obviously in order to have a Victory in Europe Day, there had to have been a War. Hundreds of Thousands of people lost their lives and I cannot imagine the relief that swept through the Country, Seventy-Five years ago when they found out that the German Forces had surrendered.
All I can say is that I am still thankful for the service and sacrifices that were made in order that I could sit out in my garden with my family, in a time of Peace.
Long may it reign.
Till next time,
