For many women, their hair is their crowning glory. The hairdressing business is a multi-million pound industry for a very good reason.
Every season brings a new ‘fad’ and I don’t mean that in an insulting way, simply I couldn’t think of a different word to use.
What I mean is there will be a specific style or technique or shade that everyone goes wild over and hairdressers are rushed off their feet giving the customers what they want.
Just have a think back to a year or so ago when Balayage was the ‘in’ thing. Everybody wanted to have that lovely dip dyed hair.
The same with Rainbow Hair, you could see it everywhere.
Now, don’t get me wrong; I am not dissing these trends. In fact I have rocked a few of them myself including the fabulous Rainbow that Lu of Q.L Salon did last year.
Over the past year I have had various styles and colours courtesy of my hairdresser and was looking at potentially going back to blonde after my trip to Greece in March.
Then COVID-19 hit.
Lockdown occurred, shops and salons closed and people had to stay home.
Of course this became a bit of a nightmare for women across the Country and World. Fake eyelashes fell out, eyebrows got shaggy, and fake nails grew right out before breaking off.
And hair? Well it got longer, paler and if you are like me, Greyer!
Now, whilst I don’t have an issue with the grey as such, I just wish it could be grey all over rather than certain sections!
Anyway, I digress.
Like most women, I haven’t been able to go to the salon for 10 weeks. My eyebrows are not too bad, due to the microblading that Lu did for me a year ago. My nails are looking wonderful as I have actually been growing them and they look and feel really strong.
My hair, well that is a totally different story.
The roots are terrible; a good 3 inches long and also full of silver hairs. The sections of rose gold and red have long gone and I have been left with brownish hair with some paler sections at the front and the bottom of the curls.
Whilst I don’t mind this as such, most of you will know that I have a low boredom threshold when it comes to my hair.
This is usually when I make some stupid decisions and then live to regret them. I really didn’t want to do this whilst unable to rush to the salon and get Lu to fix whatever silliness I have done.
However, I really had got to the point where I needed to do something to freshen up my look, but not f*ck it up!
The decision I took was to use a small bottle of Crazy Color to brighten up the faded colour and the rose gold streaks. Knowing it was semi-permanent, I hoped that I couldn’t mess it up too much.
Starting off by washing my hair and towel drying it, I grabbed a bowl, comb and some latex gloves.
Now, bearing in mind that I am not a stylist, hair professional or anyone with any knowledge or talent when it comes to hair, I intended to just slap it on and hope for the best.
Scooping up the colour, I rubbed it into the paler sections at the front, combed it through and then scrunched the curly bottom half of my hair with more of the Vermillion dye.
I knew it should only take around 20 minutes for the dye to take hold and sat down with my book to wait.
To be honest, I didn’t have high hopes that it would work as when I have used Crazy Colors previously, it has been on bleach blonde hair. If it took a portion of the vermillion, I would be a happy lady.
Washing the dye off after it’s time, I was surprised to see the water was bright scarlet. This either meant that the dye had great pigment OR it had all washed out without taking.
I combed my hair through and placed the parting in the right location. I didn’t even look in the mirror as I knew things would be totally different once my hair had dried.
Carrying on doing a little writing and some household chores, it was a couple of hours before I went back upstairs and caught a sight of my hair.
Woah!
The red was REALLY red and I was a very happy girl indeed.
To say it had worked was an understatement. It had really taken and the red was so shiny and glossy that I was thrilled. I got out the trusty Babylis Curl Secret, let it do its thing and then did my vintage easy styling.
The end result was lovely and I couldn’t wait to tell Lu what I had done!
I did start off by telling her that I had done something to my hair but it wasn’t permanent. She chuckled at my statement but was really impressed with how it came out.
I just need to sort these damn roots now!
Until next time,
