In a previous post I talked about a vintage straw hat that I absolutely loved but was a wounded bird. With the power of Google and Amazon, I was able to buy glue, dye and the brush needed to work on the hat and revive it.
Some might say that I have ruined it as it is no longer authentic. I have re-dyed it to get rid of the damage that it had; mainly from being stored in direct sunlight.
A week or so after the hat arrived, I took delivery of another wounded bird.
A stunning half moon Corde handbag with twisted lucite handles.
Unusually the handles were in perfect condition – these are usually the problem.
In this case, the problem was more structural. The inner card like lining had disintegrated and was in lose bits all in the inside of the bag and there were three holes/rips around the handle area which needed sewing up.
Now, those that know me can vouch for the fact that I can create the most wonderful cross-stitch designs that are intricate, time consuming and very easy to make a big mistake… Yet I cannot sew a damn button on.
Don’t even suggest that I use a sewing machine. I wouldn’t even know how to switch it on and get it up and running.
So, I may have bitten off a little more than I can chew, but again, it is a little wounded bird that has no use to anyone. If all else fails then I can remove the handles and use them for a crocheted bag that I want to try and make.
Either way it is a win/win situation as either the bag will be made useful or the handles will.
Of course, if I manage to fix this bag I will need to look for a pair of handles for the one I want to create.
I have a pattern and everything.
I just can’t make head nor tails of it.
Oh well, I will keep trying the old ‘make do and mend’ attitude and hopefully I will be able to sort something out.
Till next time,
