Back in March Boo and I went to Athens for a few days. I have written a few posts about each day when we were there, however I decided to do a singular post for a coach tour that we took on the Friday afternoon.

On our Way
This was mainly due to the fact that I took lots of beautiful photographs and didn’t want to just squeeze them in between a larger post.

Not bad considering this is from the coach!
So, we had spent that day at the Acropolis and the museum and now it was time to get on a luxury coach and head to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion.

Just Beautiful
Built during the Golden Age of Athens, there is archaeological evidence dating back to 700BC. It is even mentioned in Homers Odyssey as a Cape that King Menelaus sailed around on his return from Troy.

Beautiful little villages and bays
That all aside, the cape is set on the Attic Peninsular just over 40 miles from Athens. The coach picked up at several hotels before setting off on the main journey to Sounion.

Views!
As we drove along the Athenian Riviera, there were some wonderful sights to see. Crystal blue seas, tiny inlets and bays that just made me want to go and swim.

A stunning view
The journey was pretty cool and I tried to get a few shots out of the windows.

Almost there…
You could see the Temple from quite a distance and it looked wonderful and I was really excited to get to walk around it, well more like limp around it!

The Temple of Poseidon
The Temple has had many usages; a fortress, a place of worship, a place of sanctuary. Originally it had 36 columns but only 15 are still standing. And boy are they imposing!

A perfect shot
Over 20 foot high in the Doric style, they are made of local white marble and positively sparkle in the sunlight.

Couldn’t resist posing
Sadly we weren’t there at either sunrise or sunset so we didn’t get to see the spectacle that is raved about. However it was still the most beautiful site and sight!

Higher than you think!
We got to wander around for a while, taking in the views and the scenery. I managed to take a lot of photographs as it was just so picturesque.

Look at that Sky!
After about an hour, we met back with the tour guide and she was happy to tell us a little more about the site and answer any questions we had. I was just happy to look and listen.

View from the Temple with some feathered friends
Eventually we got back on to the coach and started the hour or so journey home. This time I was on the coastal side and was delighted to take even more photographs.

One of My Favourite Photographs
I have to say, The Temple of Poseidon was a real treat to visit.

The Peninsular
If you get the chance, I would certainly give it a go, but if you get the choice…. try the sunrise/sunset option as I think that would be even more wonderful than these views.

Imagine this at Sunrise….
And these weren’t too shabby at all!

Such a wonderful place
Till next time,
