For my birthday this year, I was thoroughly treated by the brilliant Boo of ‘Does My Blog Make Me Look Fat‘ when she gifted me this stunning Ivory dress from Unique Vintage.
I had been looking at it for quite awhile, but had a fair few expenses and had made the decision not to purchase it. Boo knew I was very keen on it and was a bit sad that I hadn’t manage to purchase it.
When my birthday came and she told me about her gift, I was so very thrilled.
I know that it wasn’t quite the style that I would normally wear, in that it was probably more very late ’50s/early ’60s. I absolutely adored the collar though and thought it would be something a little different.
The only slight issue that I could foresee is the fact that it was Ivory.
Now for those that know me, know I am clumsy. This is especially true when it comes to food.
If it is slightly messy, then I will usually spill it down my boobs. There have been many times when I have ruined a garment because of a greasy mark or a highly coloured stain that just doesn’t come out, no matter how much Vanish or other remedies on it.
This issue had me thinking that I would actually dye the dress a different colour which was less likely to show the dirt or marks that I seem to attract like a magnet.
However, when the dress arrived I was absolutely in love with it and I really didn’t want to change it from its original colour.
So, how did I get on with the first wear?
Well, I can happily report that I managed to eat, drink and more without totally messing it up!
The dress itself is made of a lovely soft polycotton mix with a little bit of spandex for a better fit. It has a high fold over neckline with a V back, full skirt and a Princess seamed bodice.
One of the more unusual features is the ruched waist which makes the dress fit so very well. Whilst you cannot see the full detail of it when stood front on, it does give a little bit of an embellishment, which I really like.
Being only 5ft tall, this dress reaches half way down my calf. On taller people (including the model on the website) it is just past the knees.
Personally I like my dresses being a bit longer and it allows for a full petticoat to be added underneath it.
The dress comes with a small red floral pin brooch which is very pretty. However when I tried it on, the fact that my chest is so large means that the brooch is kind of lost.
Going forward I intend to wear a large showy floral corsage or a sparkly brooch which will fit in a lot better. I will probably repurpose the pin brooch and add it to a lapel of a jacket or coat which will work a lot better.
For its first outing, I paired the dress with navy and white shoes and a navy bag. I love the nautical look and adding a bit of red via a parasol hit all the right spots for me.
I also would love to mix this look up with black and have a totally monochrome look. Kind of a reverse ‘Breakfast at Tiffanys’.
Black high heels, black beaded necklace and bracelets, black handbag and a big statement black hat.
All I can say is….Watch this space
Till next time,
