One of the first Plus-Size bloggers I read about AND met in person was the stunning Georgina Grogan of ‘She Might Be Loved.‘
This was around 7 years ago and I had no idea at all what a blog was or even where to find one. Two ladies that I had met at a Plus Size Clothing swap had become friends and this was a topic of conversation when we had all met up for a drink.
Elena and Kerry educated me all about blogging; what it was, what it meant, how people made them and gave me examples of people to go and have a look at.
They also told me that I should start blogging myself as I had a tale to tell and was quite body positive without even realising it.
Of course, as soon as I got home I went onto the internet to have a look at the sites they had recommended and was literally floored by what I was reading.
Plus Size people being happy in their bodies, actively flaunting them, writing about fashion, showing off their style AND creating a whole community.
I was hooked.
As time went on, I got to meet Georgina (GG to friends) at a few functions and she was an absolute sweetheart. There were shopping trips, lunch meets and even modelling for a large Plus Size brand.
The modelling even featured video interviews with a group of us, whilst wearing outfits designed by the brand.
It was amazingly good fun and I met so many wonderful people alongside Georgina, including her Mum, Dad and Boyfriend.
So, where am I going with this?
Well GG still blogs and is going from strength to strength.
Recently she was celebrating her 8th Blogversary and ran a competition where the top prize was a complete Dyson Airwrap Styler worth an astonishing £449.
She also had four x £100 cash prizes to give away too.
How amazing was that?
It was really simple to enter. On Instagram you had to like @georginagrogan, like the Instagram prize post and name two friends that you think would enjoy her Instagram Page.
If you wanted to be in with a chance of winning the Airwrap, you needed to pop over to her blog and leave a comment.
Of course, being a fan of hers for several of those years, I happily went onto both Instagram and the blog to wish Georgina her well deserved congratulations and to enter the competition.
There was a few weeks before the competition was drawn and I genuinely didn’t give it another thought.
You can imagine my absolute shock and surprise when early on a Sunday morning I got a message from GG telling me that I had won the Airstyler!!!
Well I was gobsmacked.
One of the main reasons for this was that from a personal front, I had had an absolutely terrible week. Family illness, an accident that required hospital treatment, sheer volume of work and my ongoing deteriorating knee had led me to be very stressed and my mood had dropped.
Given that I am medicated for my depression, my moods do tend to be pretty stable. I can control them very well and I don’t tend to have massive highs or lows.
But that weekend I had hit a real low and was struggling.
Don’t get me wrong; I wasn’t in the depths of despair, but I was finding everyday life really difficult. With Christmas coming up and the additional pressure associated with it, I was floundering.
You can then imagine just how I felt when GG messaged me.
Of course, I immediately replied to the message, asking if she was pulling my leg. I was over the moon when she came back and confirmed that I was definitely the winner and asked for my address so she could get the prize sent out the next day.
Of course, I eagerly replied and said I would let her know when it arrived safely.
Two days later there was a knock on the door and this HUGE parcel was handed over. The box was massive and quite heavy too. I have to admit to being a little confused as I didn’t think the Airstyler would be that heavy.
I mean, its a fancy hair curler/tong type of affair, isn’t it?
Well how wrong could I be?
It wasn’t JUST an Airstyler, it was the whole kit and caboodle!
By that, I mean an extra large tan leather box that when I opened it, was filled with all manner of goodies.
On the top was a large leather covered oval, stamped with the Dyson logo. It had a little notch cut out of one side and I put my finger in to lift the oval out.
Underneath the oval was the Dyson air cylinder and several different attachments.
The first one my eyes were drawn to was the Pre-Styling dryer. A grey and hot pink design, the hairdryer looked just like the Dyson Fan/Heater, in that it was an elongated oval.
Next were two 30mm Airwrap barrels, one clockwise and one anti-clockwise. This was to create ‘non-identical’ curls in a voluminous curl or wave.
Then two 40mm Airwrap barrels, again clockwise and anti-clockwise which create loose curls and waves.
Next was a Soft Smoothing Brush, again in grey and pink.
The purpose of that brush was to create a smooth blow-dry finish on the hair. It also has soft ball-tip bristles to be gently on the hair and cause less damage.
There is a second brush which is much firmer. Designed to control unruly, frizzy hair, the Firm Smoothing Brush reduces and frizz and flyaways, which is something I do suffer from.
Finally there is a medium sized volumising brush, which gives volume and shape to the hair.
Also included in the set is a small filter cleaning brush which is designed to keep the filter at the bottom of the main chamber nice and clean.
The leather case is lined in blue velvet and there is even a removable velvet tray which holds the air producing chamber (for want of a better word)
So, now I have described it, the big question is…
Is it any good?
Well it was Little Chicks Christmas Party last week and she asked me to curl her hair with the Airstyler.
No pressure then!
The pressure was even higher when I finished work and got completely stuck in traffic on the evening in question. My normal 30 minute journey took me 50 minutes and I was a little stressed when I finally got home.
Thankfully, Little Chick had already washed her hair and her marvellous sister was in the middle of brushing her long locks as I walked in the door.
She was even ready to pre-dry her hair too, which was a massive bonus for me as it took some of that pressure off me!
I took over and started drying the hair with the pre-dryer. The intention with the dryer is not to completely dry the hair, but to take it from soaking wet/towel dry to slightly damp.
The dryer attachment does that quickly and simply. In fact, it is so much quicker than a standard hairdryer of any brand I have had,
It literally took a couple of minutes to get her very long hair from exceedingly wet to slightly damp.
Then came the worrying bit, the curling part.
Now, I had watched the videos and thought I knew what to do, but I was extremely apprehensive. After all, it was her party and I needed to do a good job.
Thirty minutes later I had pretty much grasped how to do it and I have to say that it was pretty simple and very clever indeed!
I was absolutely fascinated watching the Coanda effect at work. Seeing the hair literally being sucked around the barrel was quite amazing.
The fact that you do not roll the barrel as you move up the hair is pretty clever and I have to admit left a really good ringlet. I continued around the hair and watched as every single strand of hair was sucked onto the barrel and curled.
When I finally finished her hair, I was absolutely thrilled with the result.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I didn’t great a perfect hairstyle and certainly it got much better as I went along and mastered the art of using it. But it wasn’t too bad for the first attempt.
I am now looking forward to using it on their hair again to see just what I can create with the Airstyler.
Anyone fancy being a test subject?
Till next time,
