One of the first vintage people I knew about was the wonderful Sarah of Pin Up Curl.
I had seen her on TV in a hair competition and loved her style. I was completely jealous of her hair techniques and wondered if I could ever do anything similar to my hair.

To be honest, I had yet to enter the vintage world and I was starting to investigate the clothing, hair, stylings and people who were already living and dressing in a way I wanted to.
Sarah had style and panache; vintage-ness just oozed out of every part of her. I admired and envied her in equal parts.

And then I met her in person.
I was going to one of my first vintage events in the Midlands. To be honest I can’t even remember where it was held, but I visited Sarah first to get her to style my hair.
Two Ways of Attaching
She did an amazing job and I was hooked on the vintage look!
Although I don’t remember where the event was, I do remember wearing a green velvet Collectif gown, and having a marvellous time.
Beautiful Styling
One of the other strings to Sarah’s bow, is her ability to create fantastic floral hair accessories, half-hats, corsage and more. I have had several different arrangements from her including a few custom creations that she has made to match certain outfits.
These have included everything from a brown netted hydrangea to a stunning red and yellow lily to match a tiki dress that I love and wear regularly.
A Real Bobby Dazzler
Anyway, I digress.
A few months ago, I saw that Sarah had posted about some new designs which were going live that evening. Red half hats with tassels caught my eye and I wanted to make sure that I was ready for the release.
A Perfect Match
Sadly, as always, Sarah’s designs get snapped up within minutes and I missed out on the cute little vintage inspired hat that I had my eye on.
A few weeks later I posted on Instagram; red sequinned gown and black diva hair looked epic together. Sarah commented on my post and I mentioned that I would have liked to have got my mitts on one of her half hats but had missed out.
Lady In Red
She told me to drop her a line to discuss it and so I did.
My basic requirements were red, sparkling/sequinned and a tassel or two. Sarah then went off and created her masterpiece. Several weeks later she messaged to say it was ready for me to see.
Vintage Vixen
It was so exciting as I knew that whatever she had designed would be wonderful.
I was not wrong!
Pouting And Posing
Sarah had used bright red velvety leaf shapes which were edged in sparkling glitter. The leaves were formed with ridges, points and some even had wired edges so they could be bent to sit on the head better.
The piece de resistance was a stunning beaded tassel on one side.
Ravishing In Red
It was absolutely delightful and I knew it would elevate my gown to another level.
The opportunity came three or four months later when I went to The Earl of Doncaster for a vintage weekend which included two dances.

Friday night came and I put on the beautiful sequinned dress I had chosen. The half hat was the perfect accessory and I felt more confident than ever.
Slot Machine Siren
I headed to the ballroom, sashaying my voluptuous bottom to and fro as I went. It was so wonderful to meet friends old and new, and the dress was a complete hit.
The hat, well that goes without saying. It was so stunning and specific, that everyone who mentioned it, said ‘Is it Sarah’?
Party Time
Of course, I was ecstatic to tell everyone all about it and show off her wonderful designs.
Although the half hat was made specifically to accompany the dress, as it is a beautiful scarlet and a marvellous vintage design, I know I can wear it with several of my other outfits.
