If you are a regular reader, you may have read a blog about going to see “Unfortunate” the Musical in London, earlier this year.
The untold story of Ursula the Sea Witch is a parody of The Little Mermaid and is both funny, naughty and very camp!
All of the roles are played by a small cast who take on multiple characters, apart from Ursula herself, who is performed by the amazing Shawna Hamic
After seeing it with the Bali Girls in London, I found out it was on tour and was going to be playing in April quite close to home. I immediately bought a ticket and took myself to Peterborough on a random Tuesday evening.
I had never been to the New Theatre before, but I have to say it is a fantastic theatre; easy to find, lots of parking and bright, clean and welcoming. Arriving in my little electric wheelchair, I was shown to my seat in the front row.
The show is quite unique. Puppets, dodgy beards, ladies with moustaches, and a cucumber princess called Katie!
The first time that we went as a group, we decided to wear Ursula themed get up. A purple Monica dress by Pin Up Girl Clothing, spiky hair and Ursula shoes completed the get up.
I was completely honoured to be invited to meet Shawna Hamic at the end of the show. I ended up going head over heels and landing on the stage, with utter mortification.
Hopefully this time I wouldn’t end up on the floor!
I decided on a completely different look for this performance. I had a leatherette dress that I had purchased from Unique Vintage in the USA. It was from a collection they did that had a ‘Grease’ vibe about it.
The dress was a fitted wiggle dress with a mermaid style bottom. Thin spaghetti straps and two white pin-on flowers came with it which I didn’t think went with Ursula’s style, so put them to one side.
I had my Sebastian clutch by Danielle Nicole and a beautiful pair of Irregular Choice shoes with a much more sensible heel.
Featuring both Ariel and Ursula (Flounder and Flotsam/Jetsam also make an appearance) the shoes had a flatter 1.5 inch heel, which was covered in glitter. These were far more suitable for me, without sacrificing the theme.
Driving to Peterborough didn’t take too long, and the car park was literally 100 yds from the theatre. Of course I had to stop at the bar to get a drink and some sweeties for the performance.
I had a seat right in the front row and I settled in, getting comfortable before the show started. I have to admit, I was as excited this second time as I had been the first!
In most of the performances, River Medway (from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK) took on the role of Ariel. Sadly they weren’t in the first performance I saw, however they were starring tonight.
Bonus!
As I previously mentioned, the plot is a little silly, a little naughty, and a lot sweary.
I laughed out loud to the quips and double entendres and even sang along to a few lines in certain songs. My favourite song has to be one that Ariel delights us with “Where the Cocks Are” which as you can imagine, features genitalia and a mermaid’s desires.
The cast put on a sterling show again; the dancing was energetic, the costume changes were flawless, and the puppets were so well created, that I couldn’t help grin all the way through the performance.
Sadly the performance finally came to an end, however we were treated to an encore which featured disco ball helmets and a high energy finale. The crowd were clapping and stamping along with the music and the cheers at the end were loud and proud.
It was just as great leaving the auditorium and hearing everyone chatting and laughing, debating their favourite bits in the show and how surprised they were by the naughtiness of some of the lines.
People were stopping and chatting in groups and my shoes became quite the focal point.
Some people recognised them as Irregular Choice, however not everyone did so I spent a few minutes chatting and telling them where they were from.
I was even asked by a lady if it was okay to take a picture of them as her daughter would love them.
Of course, I said yes and my feet had their own photoshoot!
It was all too soon time to get back to the car and make my way home. As it was a little later at night, the journey was a little quicker and I soon found myself back in my room, scrubbing the makeup off my face.
Given that I had really slapped the colour on, I knew it wouldn’t come off with the first attempt. Twenty minutes later and I was still cleaning it off.
I climbed into bed and as soon as my head hit the pillow, I was fast asleep, dreaming of mermaids and plus size octopus!
If you get a chance to see the show, I highly recommend it but please don’t go if you are easily offended.
Till next time

PS – The next morning my hair looked like I had stuck my finger in an electrical socket. Amazing what a bit of hairspray can do.
