Many, many moons back, I lived with an extended family including my Auntie Gwen. I have spoken about her on my blog in articles past, and she was instrumental in my upbringing.
She would sometimes call me Floss or Flossy and it was a cute pen name that only she ever used. Her middle name was Florence and maybe she used a shortened nickname of that for me, given that I was a little mini-me.
Forty plus years later and I now look like a combination of her and my Mum, although I would say my curly hair definitely comes from her, as you can see from my recent photographs.
So, what does that have to do with this post?
Absolutely nothing at all apart from I am going to be sharing my recent purchases from Miss Candyfloss, and the name made me remember happy times with a wonderful person.
Miss Candyfloss is a brand that I have loved for a long time. I have several items of clothing from the brand and wear them throughout the year and have also worn them to vintage events tied up with original vintage accessories.
My most recent order was purchased from the fantastic French company, Boho-Chic Clothing who I had previously purchased from.
Now, the reason for this, plainly and simply is that they have a great choice of items and AMAZING sales.
Miss Candyfloss is on the higher price scale compared to UK brands like Hell Bunny, Dolly and Dotty and Hearts & Roses, but this also means that sometimes it is completely out of my price range.
Most of their dresses retail for around €170 which given the quality of design, materials used and accents is actually a bit of a steal. However, for both myself and many others, it is a bit too much for a work dress, or every day type of garment.
This is where Boho-Chic often comes into play. They have some fantastic sale prices, which mean I can sometimes get 2 or 3 outfits for the price of one full price outfit.
I have written about Boho-Chic before on a previous splurge, where I managed to get a lot of beautiful clothing for a mere fraction of what they were priced at.
This included the stunning Alize Moss and the beautiful Danjela Kat, seen here at some wonderful vintage days and nights out.
Anyway, I digress.
I was on the Boho-Chic website and using their simple filter option, I asked for what was in stock in a size 5XL.
Around twenty items came up and there was quite a few that were reduced in price.
One of my first choices was the beautifully designed Lily Abalone Jumpsuit which was priced at just £42.72. An absolute bargain of a price for the sheer amount of material and design that had gone into the creation.
A heavy-ish weight tartan material in a dark grey with stripes of pale blue, off-white and an orangey red, the jumpsuit had a very fitted bodice and huge wide legs.
I have to admit, even though I had checked the size on the website, the chest was so fitted I wasn’t sure that it was actually going to fit my overly generous bust.
Being very keen to try it, I wasted no time in heading upstairs to find some shoes and accessories to go with it.
Finding a lovely reliable pair of Ruby Shoos Mary Jane style shoes with a Louis XIV heel. I knew I would need something with a little height, as being only 5ft tall, I knew the trouser legs would be extremely long on me.
I added some matching colour Lucite earrings and lipstick and left it as simple as that.
So, how was the fit?
Well, I have to say it was almost like it had been fitted to me personally.
The bust area cupped around me before skimming down over my plus size hour glass shape. Moving over my hips before spreading down to the most amazing wide leg trousers.
All the concerns that I had about the jumpsuit not fitting were completely unfounded and the fit of the garment made me feel shapely, elegant and very confident in myself.
As mentioned, I purchased this jumpsuit for the bargain price of £42.74 and I wish it came in multiple colours and patterns as I would buy every single version.
The reason?
Well, when you are the size I am, if you find something that fits as well as this does, then you take advantage and buy ALL of the variations!
Moving on, my second bargain was the beautiful Inge Regina dress in a tartan print with blue accents.
This dress featured a full skirt, fitted bodice with puffy sleeves and a very unusual cut out on the upper chest, accented with a blue bow.
Priced at just £40.63 I wasn’t sure how it would look on, but thought I would give it a chance. At the end of the day, if it didn’t work for me, I knew I could sell it on Vinted, possibly getting my money back.
In any case, again it fitted perfectly with one exception and that was the sleeves.
Now for most plus size ladies, their arms and legs are often in proportion with the rest of their body. However, my arm and legs are relatively small in comparison. This means that the sleeves were quite big on me.
This however is not something I cannot rectify. The sleeves are three quarter length with a button cuff on blue material, so all I need to do is move the button over and the fit will be much better.
I actually love the puffiness of the sleeves. I am not quite sure if they are leg of lamb or bishop sleeves, but the design is very quirky and suits me down to the ground.
Trying this on for the photographs, I had the same dark red shoes on as the tartan is made up of grey, blue, red/orange and black. However when wearing it most recently I have a great pair of blue ballet flats that match the blue accent colours.
I haven’t worn this to any special events as I see it as more of a day dress, so I have debuted it at work and got lots of compliments on the colours and design, so it seems to be a bit of a winner.
The last item I am going to review here is the stunning Natalie Bo dress in dark grey and wine.
For those of you who read my blog regularly or who know me, my favourite vintage event every year is Twinwood.
This year the Saturday was very wet and rainy and there was a certain chill in the air, even though it was August Bank Holiday.
Casting aside the summer dresses, I reached for Natalie Bo as it is a thicker material in more autumnal colours which seemed to suit the day.
Brown, cream, wine and black are all combined in a tartan pattern with wine coloured sleeves, collar and belt.
I added an original vintage black platter hat, black hotter vintage style shoes and a black Kelly style bag.
Given that this dress was a last minute substitution and not one I would normally choose for Twinwood, I got a huge amount of compliments, which I genuinely didn’t expect.
Don’t get me wrong, it is a gorgeous dress, however not one I would wear to such a prestigious event, as I mentioned. Given the reaction to it, perhaps I need to rethink my opinions on such things.
The material of the dress is almost like a flannelette, and very soft and warm. It was ideal for the weather and I am sure it is going to get a lot of wear over the autumn.
This was another cut price dress at just £41.34 yet makes me feel like a million pounds.
There were a couple more outfits that I purchased from Boho-Chic, but I haven’t had a chance to wear them and take photographs yet. They are also quite autumnal styles so I will be giving them a go soon.
All in all, I managed to get several outfits for an absolute steal and I know I will be having a look again soon as I can’t resist the exquisite designs and styling of Miss Candyfloss!
Till next time,
